Calvary Baptist Church (CBC) has had a strong Missions emphasis since it's earliest
days. Monthly support is currently contributed to 15 individual missionaries, serving in
the USA and abroad, as well as to several agencies and institutions.
The belief that Jesus emphasized the importance of 'reaching the ends of the earth'
with the Gospel, not just our own city, is the motivating factor. The means to this end is
accomplished by not only supporting established missionaries around the world, but
also by sending out people into the mission field from within CBC.
CBC has an organized missions commission co-chaired during 2008 by Gary Johnson.
The commission responsibilities include personal prayer for missionaries
while encouraging the entire congregation to do likewise through education, participation
in missions' conferences, and effective distribution of printed materials from CB and
other support mission agencies.
MISSIONARY EMPHASIS FOR January is Ben and Maggie Chan ministering to Mainland Chinese in Los Angeles and China.
After successfully planting two Chinese churches, Ben was appointed to be Missions Door's Chinese Ministry Specialist. Ben and Maggie serve the Lord among the Chinese in Southern California and China.
Through their ministry, over 2000 people have heard the Gospel, and over 100 people have believed in God and gotten baptized in Southern California. During this time they have taken mission trips to China to minister through preaching, visitation, discipleship, social concerns and training. The training is provided to church leaders, pastors and lay leaders.
To be more effective in the ministry, Ben and Maggie are working hard to build a Chinese ministry team, by both planting churches in the United States and wide-range ministry in China.
Ben and Maggie, both born and raised in China, met through their ministry involvement with the church in China. Ben's heritage is strong as he is from a five-generation Christian family.
In 1974, Ben felt the call to begin ministry in house churches. After seven years of full-time theological education at the seminary, he worked as a seminary teacher, and then as director of pastoral training and as administrative dean in Southern China.
He has also been involved in ministry in local churches since 1974. In 1993, Ben came to study at Fuller Theological Seminary, School of World Mission for Intercultural Studies, and graduated in 1995.
Maggie is the first Christian in her family. She was baptized in 1986. God added to the saved numbers in her family through their faith. Ben and Maggie joined Missions Door in 1994, right after Maggie came to join Ben at Fuller.
Ben and Maggie were married in 1992. They have one daughter, Josephine.
